Question:

Doctor. I have some goldfish that I want to treat for flukes utilizing praziquantel. I have some Mystery snails in the tank with the fish. Do I need to remove the snails before I treat the fish. Is the prazi harmfully to the snails and can the snails be a host for the flukes. I would like to treat the snails at the same time but do not want to kill my snails either. Thanks, Dr. James L. Answer:

At the present time, I am unsure if Prazi is toxic to snails. You should assume that it is however this testing might be on the list over at Koilab.com -
Mystery Snails do not harbor flukes pathogenic to Koi. While it's true that digenetic flukes can be transmitted by snails, and a fish eating bird, these flukes are not a common or widespread problem in North America due to the absence of both the tropical snail and tropical bird. Monogenea are not known to use a snail.
The Prazi will be very effective in your application however I cannot attest to the snails survival at this time.
