Question:

My comet seems to be unable to spawn. Her body has swelled to about 3 times the normal size. Is there some medication I can give to help her?

Sharon Henry

Answer:

If the fish is swollen with scales lifted up all over, this is Dropsy, and is incurable with conventional medications and wisdom. However, if the fish is simply large, the swelling could be caused by tumors, abscesses, cystic ovaries, cystic kidneys, or retained eggs. Of course there could be other causes, but the point is that there are no medications which ameliorate any of these.
The best course is to explore the abdomen, surgically. This is done without charge at Koilab.com You would bear expenses of shipping to and from the lab.
If there are retained eggs, they can be removed with a better than 80% survival rate and return of the fish. If the swelling comes from a tumor, the prognosis is much less favorable.
